Introducing

Dibs

Be the first to register and claim your files. Dibs is a new way to manage your digital assets.

We are a file fingerprinting app and service that registers your claim on the public blockchain so that you can prove you had a file at a particular timestamp.

You can also download our helper app that integrates with your desktop to easily create fingerprints and claim your files.

Using Dibs

To use Dibs, you can simply drag and drop a file into the box on the home page. We will calculate the fingerprint of the file and then upload it to the blockchain to claim your dibs.

You can also use our Finder extension to calculate the fingerprints of files directly from the Finder on your Mac.

To complete the claim of your file, we will ask you for some information that you can choose to write to the blockchain:

  • Public description (140 characters)
  • Public contact info (140 characters)
  • Any other public information you want to include such as a description.
  • A url to learn more.

Do I need to download the extension to use Dibs?
No, you don't. You can use Dibs directly from the website. The extension is just a way to make it easier to calculate the fingerprints of files on your computer and then upload them to the blockchain to claim your dibs.
What is proof?
Proof is the evidence that you had a file at a particular time. We use the blockchain to register your claim and then you can use the fingerprint to prove that you had the file at that time. The proof is a few random characters that are placed in front of the file's data, and then hashed. This hash is then registered on the blockchain. Anyone can validate the hash of the file, but being the first to register the nonce + proof hash shows that you had the file at that time. Subsequent proofs using the same nonce should not be considered proof that the user had the file.
Does the file leave my computer?
No, we don't upload your files to our servers. We calculate the fingerprint of the file in your browser (or via our desktop app) and then upload the fingerprint to the blockchain to register your claim.
Can I fingerprint anything?
Yes, either save what you want as a file, or copy the raw text into the search box on our home page and we'll compute a fingerprint for you to claim.
Is this a copyright?
No, we don't claim to be a copyright service. We are a way to register your claim on the blockchain to prove that you had a file at a particular time. In copyright law, the author of a work has the exclusive right to make copies, distribute, and perform the work. We are not a replacement for the legal process of registering a copyright. Before the Dibs service, if you wanted to prove that you wrote something at a point in time the recommended advice was to mail it to yourself (getting a postmark of the date) and then not open the envelope. This is a way to prove that you had the work at a particular time. Dibs is a digital version of this process.
Which blockchain do you use?
We use the XRPL blockchain to register your claim.
Can you show me an example claim?
Here's our claim for Dibs.
Do you have an API or Developer Docs?
Yes, check out our dev page where we show you how to create Dibs directly via the blockchain.
